Description: Tounge River Cave is probaly the most visited cave in the state. Due to the many visitors it recieves, the cave has been heavily vandalized. Several of its once beautiful formations have been stolen or destroyed. trash has been skewn in every corner of the cave, and batterys pollute the once pure stream.

Tounge River cave seems to be two seperate caves that have merged due to vadose stream erosion. The upper, older cave system (containing the entrance and camp room) seems to be formed from phreatic devolopment. The lower, younger passages, (containing the stream) is vadose formed. the two caves are belived to have met a connection point in the boulder room.

The entrance is a four foot wide opening that opens into a larger room with a big pit. The passage goes in the back of this room, off to the right. It then drops into a room known as the Rain Room (received its name from the constant dripping water from the ceiling). after the rain room it flows into a great chamber lined with sandy floors, this is the camp room. A series of crawls is after the camp room called the wind tunnel. That leads to the Dead Cowboy room, and eventually into the Boulder Room.

About 100' or so out of the boulder room the stream enters the cave. There is a 30' water fall and other features of the stream that are interesting. The Dynamo Room is above the falls. This room bellows a great sound of the water gushing just below your feet. The Zues pools are also a must see in this cave.

The key and permit can be obtained from the U.S. Forest Service office, in Sheridan WY.

Tips: Tounge River cave is an excellent summer cave destination. The Tounge Canyon offers great camping, fishing, and white water rafting, plus the cave is a short (but steep) hike away. Dayton also offers excellent paragliding & hang gliding.

I advise anybody going into this cave to pack a few small bags to haul out garbage. I usually come out with a bag full every time I go in. If everybody did this, this cave could be a lot nicer for us all.

If you are planning on exploring this cave fully I advise you to bring knee pads and wet clothing. You can sucessfully explore most of the cave without getting wet, but if you want to see the falls and other areas for all they offer, you with probaly be getting wet.
